 Art and Susan Barber started their business careers fresh out of college by opening a small retail fireplace shop in 1974 in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Selling high-quality products, the Barbers learned early that there are people who appreciate fine quality and design. Very quickly they had a growing, thriving business using the tools of nature – iron, fire, wood and passion. Surrounding themselves with the mountain people of Western North Carolina, people who take pride in their work and deserve to be called artisans, they started making furniture in 1982. Today, Art and Susan’s company, Charleston Forge, employs more than 200.
